Într-o carieră de peste şase decenii în industria filmului, Martin Scorsese a dăruit lumii o serie de creaţii devenite repere cinematografice, precum: „Taxi Driver” (1976), „Raging Bull” (1980) şi „Goodfellas” (1990), dar şi filme ca „Gangs of New York” (2002), ” The Aviator” (2004), „Hugo” (2011). Scorsese a primit de-a lungul timpului 12 nominalizări la Oscar, trofeu pe care l-a obţinut în cele din urmă în 2007, cu filmul „Cârtiţa/ The Departed”.
Anul acesta, cineastul american a fost recompensat cu premiul Lumière, pentru „ansamblul operei sale, pentru cinematografia sa generoasă, pentru lupta sa neîncetată pentru salvarea cinematografiei din trecut, pentru ficţiunile sale, pentru documentarele sale, pentru iubirea lui pentru muzică, pentru bunăvoinţa arătată tinerilor cineaşti din lumea întreagă, dar şi pentru râsul lui molipsitor”.
Scorsese mărturisea, într-un interviu, că a fost influenţat de 85 de filme în cariera sa, pelicule pe care el le consideră o lecție în cinematografie pentru orice iubitor de film.
